Description

Molasses is a viscous byproduct, principally obtained from the refining of sugarcane or sugar beet juice into sugar. Molasses varies in the amount of sugar, the method of extraction and age of the plant. Sugarcane molasses is usually used to sweeten and flavour foods.

Fun Fact: Honey is similar in calories and carbs to molasses, but its composition is somewhat different. While molasses is primarily sucrose, honey’s main sugar is fructose. The significance of this is that fructose is absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream.
