💡 Fun Fact

In the timber industry, these measurements are known as “Nominal Sizes.” For example, a “2×4” plank isn’t exactly 2 inches by 4 inches! After the wood is cut from the log and planed (smoothed) to remove splinters and even out the surface, it usually loses about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. Builders always account for this “shrinking” to ensure their structural math stays perfect!
